What is encaustic painting?
Encaustic painting, or hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax and Damar resin, which are fused to a surface to create a beautiful lustrous effect. Layering the wax and adding colored pigments, paper, photographs, Xerox transfers, etc. creates a uniquely luminous, 3-dimensional piece. The optical effect of encaustic layering is unlike any other art form, and the vivid colors of the wax and pigment make the painting seem as though it's lit from within.
Wax portraits were developed by the Greeks thousands of years ago but the technique was famously embraced again in the mid-twentieth century by Jasper Johns. Collectors are drawn to the art form's optical effects and incredible durability. Since beeswax is resistant to moisture, an encaustic painting won't deteriorate, yellow, or darken with age. Encaustic paintings don't have to be varnished or protected by glass and viewers who are tempted to touch the paintings can do so without damaging the piece.
Important Facts
- Encaustic paintings are incredibly durable.
- As with any surface, dust & grime will build up. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to dust and polish surface.
- If for any reason a piece is damaged I can, in most cases, do restoration.
- Wax can travel safely without cracking or melting within a range of about 35 degrees F to 120 degrees F.
- Because extreme heat or cold could harm the painting, we do not ship outside the US and may require overnight delivery in climate-sensitive areas of the country.
- While storing, keep away from direct heat and as with any fine art form, keep in a climate-controlled environment.
